If you have decided on using a Pinterest marketing strategy to help grow your online business, there are a few important things to know before you start pinning! In this blog post, I share my top tips to help you grow your Pinterest account!

Do Your Research

We really undervalue research. I don’t think research is always the most conventional. It can be studies and data collected in a ‘scientific’ way but it can also be done in many other ways that are a little outside the box. You can poll your audience in your Instagram stories, send an e-mail to your list, ask questions when you’re networking, ask questions to your current or past clients. But having an idea of what your audience needs help with always keep you winning.

Think of it like you’re the doctor and you’re giving your audience a yearly physical. Where does it hurt? Where do they need more support? What can you give them to help them feel better?

Your job is always to nourish them. And you have to ask questions and do research to figure out what they need to feel nourished.

Find Your Keywords

Keyword research should always be done before you start writing your blog post or creating any type of content that you’re going to be putting onto Pinterest.

Why?
Because Keywords are pretty freakin’ important on Pinterest. It is how your content gets found. Remember that Pinterest is a SEARCH engine NOT a social media platform. So your blog posts or content need to be searchable utilizing tools like keywords.

If you need help with learning more about Pinterest keywords, you can check out this blog post where I talk about the importance of keywords or you can grab my FREE guide to finding the perfect keywords on Pinterest.

I put together a *FREE* PDF that is the Ultimate Guide To Pinterest Keywords!

Inspecting the Pin

Do a double and triple check of your pin. Not just for spelling errors but you also want to make sure your pin is going to be optimized to gain the most traction on Pinterest. I would recommend this short checklist to make sure your pins are ready to post onto Pinterest:

  • Your pin is in the 2:3 ratio that Pinterest recommends!
  • Your business brand/website is located somewhere on the Pin. This prevents other creators from reusing your pin as their own and also lets viewers know who you are!
  • A high-resolution picture that doesn’t look pixelated or blurry
  • Don’t use more than 2 fonts! 3 at the max. Use a large and clear font that is easy to read. Always ‘go big or go home’ when it comes to font sizes.
  • Include a CTA (call to action) OR a hook to get viewers to click through and read the blog post or click on your website.

Create a Pin Description + Hashtags

Having a pin description is crucial to getting your content found on Pinterest. Your descriptions don’t need to be lengthy or super catchy. I would recommend 1-2 sentences and no more than 150 words. You can include 3-4 hashtags after your description. Your description should include keywords written in a more conversational tone, not just ‘robot’ talk or lists. Your audience may never see the description, but the Pinterest algorithm will! And you want the Pinterest Powers At Be to grant you more traffic and rank your pins in the search results – so make sure to get crafty and find ways to weave in your keywords into the description.

When it comes to descriptions, I like to write 1-3 different descriptions for each piece of content. I will attach them to different pins and see which keywords and hashtags perform the best.

Make sure the blog/website is optimized

This one is big folks!

Did you know that 80% of users on Pinterest are using a mobile device? Meaning you want your website to be mobile friendly!

You also want to make sure that when someone gets to your website you have *something* to offer to them.

I don’t know about you but growing up my mom always taught me that whenever someone came over to our house, we would offer them water, tea, coffee or some type of beverage. Or my personal favorite thing to offer guests when they came over was a snack. Preferably, the snack of choice was always these peanut butter pretzels my mom used to buy from Costco.

My point of sharing this with you is that you should begin to think of your website as your home. When someone comes over to your website – offer them a beverage or a snack. Do you have a free mini-course? An e-book? A free PDF? A podcast episode that would benefit them in some way?

This could be a free or paid offer or better – BOTH!
