Why Your Positive Affirmations Aren’t Working

Hey!

Bree here!

If you’re totally new to affirmations – here is a really great post I found that pretty much sums it up.

But – if you’ve been practicing affirmations for a while and you’re not noticing any changes or differences in your life or behavior, this post is for you!

I’m no stranger to positive affirmations. In fact, I write them down almost every day as part of my morning routine. I know that they DO work but it took me some trial and error to discover why certain affirmations worked and others didn’t.

I began using affirmations as a way to help with my anxiety and to gain clarity in my life. It was also around this around that I was introduced to the work of Louis Hay. I read her book ‘You Can Heal Your Life’ and like many others have reported after reading her books; my life changed. It not only began my journey with affirmations but also of deep healing from my stress burnout.

Every morning, I would write down about 25 positive affirmations. (If you want to read about my journaling routine you can find it here!) I felt like a crazy person sitting there and scribbling in my notebook. I didn’t know what I was doing. I didn’t know if affirmations actually worked. But I was desperate. I just wanted to feel good again.

For the next 30 days, I followed this routine. It became like second nature. I woke up. Meditated. Wrote down my affirmations. Walked my dog. Made my eggs. Drank my tea….

Did my life MAGICALLY change after 30 days? Nope!

But what did happen was that I did feel better, less anxious, healthier, energetically lighter and more connected to myself – things I had written down as affirmations.

And there is no ‘secret’ formula for making affirmations work but I do attribute the success of my affirmation practice to the ACTION behind them.

I didn’t feel better because I wrote it down 100 times over the course of 30 days. I felt better because I was taking care of myself. I was sleeping 8 hours every night, I was connecting with my support system and I was making major lifestyle changes that lowered my stress levels.

I didn’t feel healthier because I ate tacos and pizza every night. I felt healthier because I was exercising and eating well every day.

I didn’t feel more connected to myself because I spent 4 hours on Instagram every day looking at all of the hashtags and Instagram fitness models. I felt more connected to myself because I was meditating and spending less time on social media.

I didn’t write down my affirmations and then go lay on my couch and watch Netflix till 3 am.

There was a lot of work involved.

Whenever a friend or client comes to me and tells me that they think affirmations are a bunch of ‘woo-woo BS.’ I’m like, “If you believe that, then you’re right and it is true.”

Writing down or saying affirmations requires you to be open-minded and open to suggestions from the Universe/Source on the ‘how.’

AKA: It requires a shit ton of trust from you to believe in the unknown.

Here are my ‘dos’ and ‘donts’ for creating an affirmation:

We focus on what it is that we don’t have and what it is that want in our lives and create an affirmation on having that specific want.

However, we don’t want to our affirmation to affirm the ‘lack.’

A perfect example is someone who says, “I have a million dollars.’

Do you have 1 million dollars right now? No. (And if you do – hit yo’ girl up! I’d love to chat!)

The aim is to ATTRACT that 1 million dollars through an affirmation

In order for affirmations to work, there has to be an ACTION to support the affirmation.

Saying that you want to have a million dollars and then ordering a pizza isn’t going to cut it, sister!

Or saying that you want to start your own business but never creating the website or finding suppliers etc, your affirmation isn’t going to come to fruition.

Or even affirming that you want to find your soul mate but continuing to date the same type of guy/girl – it’s going to make your soul mate magically appear.

Instead of saying “I have 1 million dollars” say “I am working towards obtaining 1 million dollars.’ Or ‘I am gradually obtaining 1 million dollars.’

The goal is to start with where you are right NOW.

Remember – our brains are smart. Give yourself some credit! We intrinsically know when something is true or not true.

Some examples of ‘I am’ affirmations:

  • I am making healthy and nourishing eating choices.
  • I am grateful that my body is healing and healthy.
  • I am working on a compassionate and understanding relationship with my partner.
  • I am finding opportunities to be kind and caring everywhere.
  • I am working towards earning XYZ amount of money in my business/additional income.

Have you practiced affirmations before? Did they work for you?

I’d love to hear more!

  1. Ooooh, I absolutely love this. Some people think affirmation is magic but I agree with everything you said here. There need to be positive actions from our part to make affirmations working. I love positive affirmations and I say mine daily or whenever I need it. Love your post!

  2. This is so true. In the same way, negative affirmations have the same effect which is why I try to not speak negative things out loud. Its like a bride not wanting to hear the R word (rain) near or on her wedding day. I rather talk about sunny days and think about the possibility of rain but not have that negative thought cloud everything else. This post is amazing!

  3. I have never tried this or heard it it to be honest. I may try it at some point to help me keep motivated and positive

  4. Great post and I really enjoyed reading this. I agree with you, that affirmations should be supported not only in words but with an action.

  5. Yaaas! Couldn’t agree more , I actually have an upcoming post about the same topic “the problem with the law of attraction” loved this post!

  6. I love doing affirmations! They force me to take a moment to think clearly about my goals and remind myself that I’m worth it.

  7. I have heard about people who write affirmation and repeat them every morning, but I have never done it myself, so I don’t really have an opinion about this. Not sure, maybe I’ll try some day.

  8. This is simply a great post and a very enlightening one. We should always make this as a guide in our daily lives and learn from this.

  9. My affirmations are mostly based on the qualities that I know I have but am scared to put in action…scared that they might turn out to be just my imagination and fail me at the last moment. They help me face my fears more confidently.

  10. I like how you elaborated on not having affirmations that come from a place of lack or want. I never really thought about it like that, but I understand what you are saying. I also do affirmations and have a vision board that I look at daily. It helps keep me focused and sends a message to my subconscious and to the universe of what I am striving to attain (that which is already mine).

  11. Wow, what great advice! I feel a lot of people need to read this post because it really brings the topic to the table. It’s a discussion I often have with my husband. Affirmation can work if you put in the work.

  12. I never really looked at positive affirmations as something that i need to practice over and over – like working out. I have to put in positive consistently – to get positive back! love it!

  17. I was wondering if you ever thought of changing the layout
of your site? Its very well written; I love what youve got to say.
But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so people could connect
with it better. Youve got an awful lot of text
for only having 1 or two images. Maybe you could space it out better?
