Hi Ya’ll!

I have another guest post for you! Brittany from DivineIndepence and I have been chatting over the last few weeks all about meditation and the benefits!

Here is a little bit about Brittany:  She is a 27-year old previous property manager turned blogger. She is focused on higher vibrations and daily motivations and meeting more positive souls on their life journeys! Be ready to learn about healing crystals, natural wellness, and the journey to Divine Independence.

I invited her on to write a piece about walking meditation because we get it! Sometimes sitting still is just NOT an option. Especially for me and my monkey brain!

I hope you enjoy this post and go show Brittany some love at divineindependence!

Walking Meditation

“Your mind is your instrument. Learn to be its master and not its slave.”

-Remez Sasson

I am going to be 100% honest and tell you that my journey on the meditation path has been less than that of a dutiful Buddhist monk sitting in silence for hours or day. Who am I kidding? It is hard for me to sit still in silence for longer than 2 minutes!

Up until a few weeks ago, my days were spent at an office dealing with a million things at once, so stilling my mind was difficult after training it to be able to manage twelve different departments and eighty employees at the same time. Not to mention, I spent all day at a desk, my body was not feeling sitting in silence for even five more minutes after my workday was finished.

I also grew up with nine other siblings, so I am sure that you already know there was NEVER a quiet moment in my childhood home. There was always a sibling following me around, or chores to do, or my little sister screaming at my little brother because he took her doll. Does this seem all too familiar? Well, not the nine siblings part because I am sure that your parents had a T.V., as in they were never bored!

See? It is okay not to take life so seriously! Anyway, back to the point, which is where this path is headed I promise.

Sitting in complete silence seems almost impossible for me. You too? WHEW! I knew I wasn’t the only one. So, I set out to find a way to receive the benefits of meditation a different way then what I was seeing EVERYWHERE, to be able to test it, and share it!

To be able to walk while “meditating” just doesn’t seem right, does it? I think that is because some of us are under the impression that meditation is shutting the mind down. That used to be me, but I have learned that meditating is focusing the mind so that subconscious thoughts that are often drowned out with our constant chaotic ego thoughts can speak to our soul.

Ego thoughts can be “That store clerk was so rude to me today, why?” or “What do I need to put on the grocery list?” These thoughts from the ego are either dwelling on something behind you or something that is yet to come before you. However, I have found mediation walking calms these chaotic thoughts so that I am able to focus on the moment and be in the present with myself.

I like to go to my nearest nature park, lake shore, or pond. I live in Oklahoma, so I would go to the ocean if I could believe me! Just make sure you are in an area free of shouting, yelling, traffic noises, and major distractions. I usually find a safe place to walk where I can be barefoot, this is optional though!

I always take deep intentional breathes before I start walking for as long as I feel necessary to focus my energy on the walk. Once I start, I make sure to be mindfully aware of my footsteps left and right and left and right. I will then start to notice nature as the magnificent beauty that it is. I watch the birds flying from tree to tree, the turtles sunbathing on a log, and the wind sweeping down the plain. Yes, that was a reference to the Oklahoma musical! The point is, I set my intentions and thoughts solely on my walking and admiring nature and all its forms.

Sometimes my ego thoughts are so much that I must focus on my walking and intentional breathing only so that I am able to be aware of the present moment. Other times, I will listen to meditation music along with my walk as well so that I can be guided to see the beauty in my surroundings and listening to the universe.

I always write in my journal after my meditation walks as all types of emotions are known to be produced. I have felt energize and other times I have felt sad. I always acknowledge the feeling for what they are and let go of the negative ones, while holding the positive.

Not all our paths to the inner self are the same, however, I hope that my experience with mediation walking will help you find a way that best fits you personally. There is no one way to meditate, and this was the perfect way for me to be able to see that! I find that my concentration is getting better and the thought of sitting in silence doesn’t seem so intimidating for me. Because silence isn’t empty, it is full of answers, that are locked down deep inside us all along. We must take the time to intentionally make ourselves aware of those answers.

Happy Walking!

  1. The mind is a very powerful tool and thinking to get results is very crucial to our being. I like to take walks too but most of the time it’s for anti- inertia purposes.

  2. I love reading this. Very inspiring, I used to think when I was younger. And being at home feels like chaos (back then, so noisy and I can’t even concentrate on my homework) What I do is to go out and ride a bike.. walk and I’ll go home peacefully and feel recharged.

  3. I actually thinking of going to a monk temple for meditation. Been so stress and busy lately. Need some time to love my self again. And rehabilitate my mental consciousness!. Thanks for sharing your experience. So inspiring!
