I’m about to give you the low down on my favorite meditation apps.

Listen, I totally get where you might be at.  

Maybe meditation is something new to you, or perhaps, you’re thinking about trying it out.

First and foremost, meditation doesn’t have to be this crazy practice where you sit like a Monk for 2 hours at 5 am every day. You don’t have to go the top of a mountain or sit on the beach to practice meditation “correctly.” (I mean, if you want to become a Monk or can sit at the beach every day…by all means DO IT!) 

It is my belief that as long as you are focusing on the rise and fall of your breath and returning back to the breath after you’ve become aware of a thought, you’re meditating.

So there ain’t no shame in using an app to help guide your meditation.

There are tons of apps dedicated to meditation so I chose the 4 that I enjoyed the most.

I totally understand when you’re trying something new – the last thing you want to do is spend your hard earned money on something that you’re not 100% sure is right for you. This is why a lot of meditation apps have ‘free’ content and ‘premium’ content that you have to pay for.

I did my review based on the FREE content which is usually a pretty accurate reflection of the paid content.

Side note: This post was written in February of 2018. The interface of the apps is subject to change. I did not include the prices on subscriptions as those are subject to change too. My reviews are on the free content they provided during this time. This is not a paid/sponsored post. All opinions are my own.  

Onto the good stuff…

For starters, I like to keep all of my apps related to meditation in one place. I also have the iherb.com app located in my ‘health folder.’ If you haven’t heard of iherb.com definitely check them out! They are a MECCA of wellness and natural products like vitamins, oils, supplements, body wash, facial products, even food!

 

Calm

Calm is by far my favorite. I may be a bit biased because it’s also the app that I’ve used extensively. I also feel like they have the most ‘free’ content and rotate it quite frequently. They have a wide range of free meditations: beginners, anxiety, sleep, focus, stress, relationships etc. The app also offers different background settings and music to help find your comfort level for meditation or sleep. Another great feature is the ‘7 Days of Calm’ and ‘7 Days of Focus’ series that they are currently offering for users. It is 7 days of guided meditation  You can also plug-in your headphones at nighttime and listen to one of their sleep stories. (I listened to one yesterday  and was out like a light in about 5 minutes) The latest addition to the app is the Calm Masterclass which is content created by experts in their respective fields. (This is a paid feature but if you’re like me and enjoy learning from experts about mindfulness, meditation and how it impacts the world around us – this would totally be worth it.)

Headspace

Headspace was actually one of the first meditation apps that I downloaded. I believe, at the time, it was a brand new app and was still working out a few user kinks. It definitely has changed since I first used it. I felt like every time I clicked on a meditation or basically anywhere on the app – I was prompted to their subscription page. As a user, it wasn’t clear to me which features were paid or free. However, I do like the idea that you can purchase a ‘pack’ which is essentially a group of meditations geared towards anxiety, stress, sleep, depression, cancer, pain management, work performance, students, self-esteem, regret, anger etc. You can also purchase single meditations. The ‘Basics’ (which is free) is a 10-day session that BASIC-ally (ha, see what I did there?) teaches you the foundations of meditation.

Meditation Studio

Meditation Studio was probably the most user-friendly meditation app I tried. It’s clean, simple and is no fuss when it comes to finding a meditation that suits you. Just like all of the others, they have courses, collections, unguided meditations, and teachers. The list of teachers is pretty extensive so you can definitely find someone you vibe with. I’m sure we can all agree that not all teachers are created equal. (I mean, who didn’t have a shitty teacher with cigarette breath in high school?)  I personally prefer a male voice when listening to guided meditations but again, it boils down to preference! The standout feature for me was the schedule they have built in. You can pre-select the meditation you want and set a reminder. I think this could be really valuable if you have a big meeting or presentation on a specific day and want to use meditation to calm your nerves. Or maybe, simply, keep you accountable to get your meditation practice in for the day!

10% Happier

10% Happier was created by Dan Harris who is also the author of 10% Happier and host of the podcast 10% Happier. I might be a bit bias because I L.O.V.E Dan Harris! His interview that he did with Josh Radnor (Ted Mosby from How I Met Your Mother) in 2016 was what really set me on the path of diving into meditation. This is not just a meditation app, it has courses and coaches to help you develop a deep practice. (Some courses are for subscription members only) 10% Happier also has free meditation by some of the leaders in meditation community such as Sharon Salzberg, Joseph Goldstein, Jeff Warren and Sebene Selassie. Definitely a good place to start if you’re into learning about the benefits of mindfulness meditation.

  2. Hi, I enjoyed your reviews and also use Insight App. I love it and I use Meditation Studio as well. I haven’t tried Calm yet but the idea of a sleep story sounds appealing. I have tried a couple from 10% happier, I’m just not using it much right now. I am going to save this website to read more later!
