In celebration of launching my Freebie Packet… or should we call it a FreeBREE packet? (Sorry, I have a thing for lame puns!) I was thinking I would write a post about how to PRACTICE these 11 Mantras!

Here we gooooo….

So what IS a mantra?

Well, it is a phrase that can be repeated over and over again during a meditation or yoga practice to set the intentions for that class or practice. However, they are now commonly used outside of those spaces and are being used to prevent habitual patterns or negative thoughts.

I personally use my mantra’s in the morning after my meditation because I prefer to only focus on my breathing during my practice. I also repeat a mantra as often as possible. Whenever I find myself spiraling into some dark thoughts or having a stressed out moment, I began to repeat my mantra and focus on my breathing. This overrides my brain’s automatic response that just wants to keep playing with that negative thought past its welcome. You can really develop your own practice to include mantras into your daily routine- it’s truly a personal choice.

On a more technical level, the word mantra can be split into two; ‘man’ which means mind and ‘tra’ which means vehicle. AKA “mind vehicle”

Think about it this way, if your mind was driving you to a destination, would you want it to take you to a beautiful tropical beach with crystal blue waters and white sand OR to the middle of a desert during the summer with no water?

You would want to go to the beach…duh.

Mantras help you become aware of the negative and dark thoughts you may have and then switch your focus into some self-loving thoughts. When we repeat a phrase or series of words, we are affirming the meaning to ourselves and allowing the meaning to soak into our subconscious. This helps us overcome negative habits and patterns.

Sooooo what should you say in your mantra?

Well, some of the most ancient mantras are written in Sanskrit. You might be familiar with the popular OM mantra which is the sound of the universe.

However, if you’re new to this whole mantra world – repeating a slew of words in a language that you don’t understand can be difficult.

I prefer to keep my mantras short and in English. I use 3 short phrases and repeat them 3 times. (This ‘3’ thing is totally random and just a pattern that my brain gets stuck on easily which is why it’s perfect for mantras!)

When I’m ending my morning meditation, I take a full breath for each phrase in my mantra while I say it in my head.

For example my mantra this week has been: “I am healthy. I am calm. I am love.”

I inhale -“I am healthy”
Hold the breath – “I am calm”
Exhale the breath- “I am love”
I repeat this 3 times.

If I’m feeling off or overly anxious that day, I’ll do this exercise throughout the day but really you can incorporate mantras into your lifestyle however you see fit!

If the whole breathing thing isn’t your jam – just say it in your head on repeat. If I’m cooking or folding laundry, I’ll repeat my mantra in my head.

For me, the most effective time to use a mantra is to fill that ‘dead’ space in my thoughts. When I give my ego the opportunity to penetrate my thoughts – it’s never good. So having a mantra allows me to stay in a positive headspace.

I try to mix up my mantra every few weeks or when I’m feeling a ‘pick me up’ in a certain area of my life.

I’d like to end this post with two one of my favorite quotes by Buddha that remind me why mantras or ‘mind vehicles’ are so important:

“Rule your mind or it will rule you”

“What you think, you become.
What you feel, you attract
What you imagine, you create.”

I hope you enjoyed this post! Let me know in the comments down below how you practice mantras!
