I don’t know about you…. but I am NOT a morning person.

I will hit snooze 500 times. I sacrifice doing my hair for another 15 minutes of sleep. I can’t formulate complete sentences until I have my coffee. I hate working out in the mornings. My friends and family know to not have a conversation with me until I’ve had my breakfast and coffee.

Mornings for me ROUGH.

I just love my bed. I love snuggling with my dog. I love the peace and quiet the mornings provide. I love the feeling of a fresh start. I love hearing the morning doves that have nested outside my window.

So when you try and pull me out of my zone…duh…I’m going to go out kicking and screaming.

But mornings also set the tone for the day so it’s important to set up a good routine that focuses on putting your best foot forward.

When I was working in an office, I would scoff at those articles about setting up a morning routine that literally took 3 hours.

It would be broken down into timestamps like:

6:00-7:00
Go to a super expensive gym/workout class
7:00-7:20
Shower in rain from the Amazon Rainforest
7:20-7:30
Pick eggs from the chickens in your backyard + drink a $13 juice
7:30-7:45
Read an entire dictionary
7:45-9:00
Do your make up like a Kardashian then get dressed by your personal stylist

Yeah….right….

…Who has TIME for that? I get that it’s probably a routine that works for some people but if you have a job, kids, and responsibilities…people need to get their day going.

Plus, strict timetables like that STRESS me out!

My morning routine is pretty simple. I like to keep it flexible and fluid so I have the autonomy to mix things up. I love to create healthy habits and self-care routines but I also think they should be mixed up every once in awhile.

I focus on 3 things in my morning routine: meditation, movement, and breakfast.

Meditation

I always meditate for about 10 minutes in the morning. This is non-negotiable for me. Sometimes I use a guided meditation app, other times, I just sit in silence. It really depends on my mood. Some days I might wake up late (because I hit snooze 13 times) and I’ll only have 5 minutes. But I need to have some minutes dedicated to meditation to center myself in the mornings.

Meditation has truly transformed the way that I live my life. I have learned to look for answers in silence. I handle stressful situations with ease. I’m less reactive to certain stressors…I could go on and on. I just know that I need it and making it part of my morning routine seemed like a no-brainer.

Movement

The next part of my morning is to walk my dog. I only have a little patio area and not a true backyard so I like to walk him around our complex. I have some beautiful walking trails and scenery that surround our complex so I try to get walk those for about 20 minutes. This really gets my body in the mindset of “MOVE”  I’ll put on one of my favorite jams or Spotify playlists to get my body movin’ and groovin’

When I come back from our walk, I either make myself some breakfast or I do some stretches and light yoga. (It really depends on how hungry I am in the morning)

Yoga/Stretching

I LOVE foam rolling. I also love stretching my arms and back since I tend to hold a lot of my tension there. I like to loosen up my muscles after sleeping for 8 hours. One of my favorite yoga channels is Yoga With Adriene. Honestly…I’m a total fangirl for her! I first heard about her a year ago and I did one of her 30-day yoga challenges and have been hooked ever since!

Breakfast

Breakfast is SO important for me. I went years without eating breakfast and once I started taking the time to break the fast, I noticed a HUGE improvement in my energy levels and cravings. I’m not starving and shaking before lunch. I’m not over eating in the afternoons because I’ve only had X amount of calories and nutrients that day. My energy levels stay consistent throughout the day. Everyone’s body is different though, so do what’s best for you!

I prefer to go for some protein in the mornings. My body is super sensitive to sugar, so I opt for eggs and sometimes I’ll do a melody of sweet potatoes, bell peppers, and red onions. Coffee is a MUST. I mix in some cinnamon and almond milk into mine. (PRO TIP: During the summer months, I pour coffee over a tall glass of ice to make an iced coffee!)

To mix it up, I’ll do overnight oats. Last year, I started experimenting with what I like in my overnights and now I’m hooked!

Mantras

Once I am done with stretching and eating breakfast, I take about 5 minutes to say my mantras.

I actually have a voice memo that I recorded of myself saying the mantra’s 3 times each. I listen to them and say them aloud. My mind can get hooked on a negative thought and then I just spiral down from there. So I like to take a pause before I get my day started and set the right intentions.

If you’re not into mantra’s, this would be a good time to write in your gratitude journal, pray, or do a quick spiritual exercise.

My entire morning routine takes about 45 minutes to an hour.

If I have extra time (which is a rare blessing!) I like to read for about 15 minutes. I am always always always reading a new book but I also have my favorites that I return to.

I try really hard to not look at my emails, texts or missed calls during this time. Sometimes something urgent might pop up and I have to take care of it straight away but I do my best to return to my morning routine as quickly as possible. However, life happens and I don’t beat myself up if I don’t get to stretch or make myself the breakfast I really want.

Morning routines and self-care should FEEL good, they shouldn’t feel forced or rushed. It’s not another thing to just ‘check off your list’ to feel productive. Take this time to be with yourself.
