Pinterest marketing is a great way to grow your online business and brand. But if you’re brand new to using Pinterest to grow, you really want to have your ideal client or target niche down. This blog post is great for beginners or even seasoned Pinners!

Who is your customer? Your client avatar? Your demographic? Your ideal customer? 

Any way you want to put it…you need to know who your audience is because everything you create on Pinterest, from Pins to boards to blog posts has to be geared towards them. 

Everything that you do on Pinterest (or in your business) should be about providing value to your ideal customer. 

I love Pinterest for some of the same reasons everyone else does: outfit ideas, recipes, workouts, vision boards etc. I still use Pinterest for those things, however, you would never know because there is this handy dandy little feature on Pinterest that allows you to create secret boards so only you or people who select can see those boards. 

Let’s face it…your ideal customer is here to learn something from you that is going to benefit their lives in some way…not what cheese dip you’re bringing to your best friend’s boyfriend sisters wine night. Capiche? 

If you have two very different businesses, let’s say you are a meal prep maven and you also teach businesses how to write killer copy, chances are you have two very different ideal customers. Not all meal preppers are going to be looking for how to write e-mails. I would create two separate Pinterest business accounts and keep content separate. And I wouldn’t say this is a hard and fast rule – you can definitely blend your audience. For example, I helped a client who had a gaming and mental health blog. Two things you wouldn’t think go together but she made it work. 

I also want to add about starting two different Pinterest accounts – be very diligent about this – it can be a huge undertaking to manage two accounts. If you can start with one account and build that up, get your Pins on Tailwind and then start up the second account. 

When you’re thinking about who you’re pinning for, I want you really implore empathy. Get inside of their head. I want you to think of search terms that they would be typing in and what value are they in need of? 

For example, since my ideal customer is in the online space they are  probably going to be looking up things like:
How to create an online course
Entrepreneurial tips/Productivity 
How to start a podcast
How to build your e-mail list 
Blogging ideas or for beginner

If you are a yoga teacher some search terms folks might be looking up would be like:
Yoga for beginners
At-home yoga 
Morning yoga practice 
Yoga inspiration 

If you are a meal prep cook some terms people might search for:
Easy lunch ideas 
Quick breakfast 
Meal prep for beginners 
Meal prep for the week 
Meal prep ideas 

I think you get it. All of these terms that I just gave you are great keywords to include in your Pins and Pin descriptions. If you need some help finding your keywords, I’ve got a great *FREE* PDF for you.  Click here to grab it!

It’s not as complicated and scary as SEO but Pinterest is a search engine so you definitely want to make sure that your content is searchable for your ideal customer or client!

Your goal is to think of terms that when your ideal customer is searching…you’re showing up. You’re the one feeding them value. 

A quick note on an ideal customer: 

It doesn’t mean that you’re not going to work with anyone else, you may have some variants in who you’re serving. So don’t become too strict with who your ideal customer is but you definitely want to have an idea. 

I can give you an example, my ideal customer is a female entrepreneur. She’s driven. She’s focused on serving people. She either already has a service or product or she’s in the process of creating it. She’s struggling to get sales and leads on Facebook or Instagram or both. She has a website or blog already but isn’t sure how to utilize it to actually help her business. 

The reality: I actually worked with and connected with more male clients last year. 60% of Let’s Get Into It podcast listeners are men. 50% of my demo on Instagram is male. 40% of my e-mail subscribers are men. But 80% of the blog readers are women. So – there can be a big variant in your ideal customer. And that’s okay. It’s not always so black and white. There is always a lot of grey area!

But the more that you niche down – the more you’re going target that ideal client.
