If you’ve been wondering if Pinterest is a good marketing strategy for your online business – keep reading! In this post, I give some tips and tricks for beginners and if Pinterest is the right move for your online business!

One question I get asked a lot is…”Who is Pinterest NOT for?”

Some other repeat offenders:

What if I blog about underwater basket weaving? Is it still for me?
Answer: Yes. Go get your underwater basket weaving on! There are over 250 million monthly users on Pinterest! Trust me – someone is into your niche!

What if I’m not a great writer?
Answer: Are we trying to win a Pulitzer Prize here?

I used to have the same mindset – that I had to be a trained writer, go back to school to get a degree in journalism or that I had to have natural writing talent.

And sometimes people will be naturally more talented at something than you are. But in my book – work ethic supersedes talent.

As long as you have the desire to teach through your writing and provide value to your community, you’re on the right track.

Plus, chances are that you’re already writing blog posts on social media and just have to refurbish them into a longer-form style of content.

What if I’m a dude? Isn’t Pinterest for stay-at-home-moms? And women?
Answer:
First off – don’t knock a stay-at-home-mom…they have the toughest jobs in the world! And they are full of valuable tips and tricks for staying healthy, on track for budgets and so many other helpful things.

The simple truth is that Pinterest is for whoever wants it to work for them

We have seen men super successful on Pinterest (yes, dudes!) simply because they made it work for them. They figured out how to niche down and create content for dudes…just like them.

But to make it really clear, Pinterest isn’t for everyone. And if your audience doesn’t hang out on Pinterest – it’s probably not the right platform for you to be investing your time, energy or money into.

But all myths aside…

There are a few types of people that Pinterest is not for. It’s nothing personal. They aren’t bad people. They might have more success on a platform that suits their needs more. Ain’t nothin’ wrong with that – just find the platform that feels good to you and where your ideal client or customer is hanging out!

Pinterest is not for…

1. People who don’t want to put in the work.

Pinterest takes work. Period the end. If you don’t have the desire to put in work to grow than Pinterest isn’t the right place for you. If you’re on every other platform, it might become overwhelming trying to keep up with Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat.

When I first started my blog, I stuck to Pinterest for a year. I didn’t promote my blog on any other platform. It sounds crazy because so many people think that they need to be on every.single.platform. To be successful. When the reality is that it’s best to stick to one or two platforms and really master them before expanded or venturing off to other platforms.

2. People who are looking to “blow up” quickly.

This is where Pinterest differs from social media. No one is ‘Pinterest Famous’ like they are ‘Instagram Famous’ or “YouTube Famous.”

It’s not a social platform in the ways that Instagram or Facebook is. You’re not going to get recognized in the streets or at the grocery store.

Pinterest can help you direct traffic to your other platforms via your website but it certainly isn’t going to get you “famous.”

So, if you’re looking for fame and to be recognized when you go out… this probably isn’t the right platform for you.

3. People who aren’t interested in providing valuable content to their community

I will say this until I’m blue in the face…provide value.

Provide 2-3x’s the value that you think you need to provide.

People are on Pinterest because they are looking to learn something.

4. People who just want to make $$$ as fast possible.

I’m going to copy what Gary V says when he talks about business…“it’s a long game.”

Pinterest is a long game.

Depending on where you’re at in your business, it can take months or years to really get everything in place to where you’re generating a consistent income.

So, if you need to pay your rent by next month…blogging and using Pinterest to generate traffic to your website might not be the best place to start.

There is a lot of work up front (as I mentioned above) but once you have all of your systems in place – the “pay off” can be substantial.

Have you considered using Pinterest as a marketing strategy for your business? Or did your mindset fall into the trap of one of the myths!
