Hello, My Sweet Sweet Friends!

Bree here.

On my last post, I wrote about how consistency is KEY when practicing mindfulness and meditation.

Consistency is actually vital in just about every aspect of life – health, wealth, relationships, careers etc.

Which is why Iā€™m here today!

Now Iā€™ll be forthcoming and let you in on a little secret.

I used to be the type of person who claimed that she wasnā€™t consistent with anything. I hated being in a routine, claiming that it didnā€™t give me ā€˜freedomā€™ to do the things I wanted to do.

At the time, I had just turned 21, was binge drinking every weekend and eating Jack-in-the-box tacos for breakfast and downing Advil like they were tic-tacs.

Thankfully, we outgrew that stage and now I drink magnesium at 9 pm only to wake up and eat oatmeal and take vitamin d for breakfast.

Talk about a GLOW-UP.

Now my body and mind CRAVE routine, structure, and consistency.

Here are my 5 tips and tricks to get consistent:

Make one small change at a time:

Listen! I know that you get into these moods where youā€™re going to do yoga every day, eat grapefruit for a snack instead of chips, youā€™re also going to write that book and start that project ā€“ youā€™re going to do it ALL and youā€™re going to do it right NOW!

Iā€™m that type of person too.

Which is why I also know that when you try to start that diet, write that book and begin that course all at the same time ā€“ youā€™re going to get discouraged halfway through and then get mad at yourself in 3 months when you havenā€™t made any progress.

Slow your roll, sister.

Take on ONE task at a time. Master it. Then move onto the next thing.

Make your first task a simple one ā€“ drink more water or work out twice this week.
Once you manage that ā€“ youā€™ll be on a roll.

Our brains canā€™t differentiate between accomplishing BIG goals and SMALL goals. They release the same amount of chemicals. So there is no reason to try to take over the world TOMORROW.

Ask yourself if this is realistic?:

This isnā€™t to discourage you from setting goals or becoming consistent.

But if youā€™re working till 12 am every night, do you think that itā€™s realistic for you to wake up at 5 am and workout? Maybe you could do it for a few days but Iā€™m talking long-term here.

Probably not.

If youā€™re working till 12 am, maybe itā€™s more realistic for you to work out BEFORE you go to work or another time in your schedule.

If you’re studying for a big exam that’s next week and you’ve also got to meet that deadline at work, is realistic for you to start a crazy new diet?

I totally believe in that saying that ‘there is never going to be a RIGHT time to start’ but I also believe that as we go through life, there are going to be times where we are busier and more stressed than usual.

These are not the times to start some crazy new workout routine, diet or take on a new project or make a lifestyle change.

Iā€™m all about being practical and what fits into your LIFESTYLE.

Set a billion alarms:

Iā€™m not kidding!

Alarms are your BFF in the beginning!

During the afternoonā€™s, I usually feel a huge slump in my energy. One way I combat this is by taking a quick 15-minute walk and get outside to keep all my juices flowing and get away from my desk.

I set an alarm 15 minutes before I schedule to take this walk and 15 minutes after.

The reason I set one for AFTER is that Iā€™ll get caught up in a task or began piddling around. Itā€™s my reminder to stay on track.

Write it down:

Canā€™t stress this enough. WRITE THAT SHIT DOWN.

Make a schedule. Write it down. Write it 3 times, 4 times, 5 times. Hang it around your house ā€“ on your fridge, on your mirror, as a bookmarker in your journal, or in your car.

This subconsciously reminds you what youā€™re supposed to be doing and when.

Donā€™t beat yourself up:

Like I said earlier, our lives change.

We get new jobs, we move, we have babies, we get married or divorced ā€“ that is the natural ebb and flow of life.

So itā€™s okay for things to get pushed to the side or have a different routine than you had before.

Whatā€™s important is that we always return to what helps us practice self-care and creates a mindset that pushes us to the next level of our lives.

One last thing!

I want to point out that lots of the things Iā€™m consistent with, I hated doing in the beginning.

What you need to do isnā€™t always what you want to do.

If being successful in accomplishing your goals, whatever they may be, is worth it to you ā€“ youā€™ll make the necessary sacrifice of pleasure for necessity.

Like you guys, I would love to crack open a diet coke, make some chips n’ dip and watch 8 hours of The Real Housewives but what I want MORE is to create a community of women who support each other in stressing less and shifting their mindset so they can go after whatever it is they really want in life.

So guess what Iā€™m doing?

Till next time!

  1. I love your suggestions for how to do better by being self-aware. This is roughly the process I employ constantly, as I am making an incredible shift to running our businesses full time. I am pouring every ounce of energy and all my resources into it, but sometimes I need to step back and ask if this current momentum is sustainable. Thanks for reminding of this final push across the start line!

  2. I am still looking for my “routine.” I’ve outgrown the drinking and hangover stage, but I really haven’t been too consistent with anything except my writing. These are great tips for someone like me!

  3. I really needed this today! I can absolutely relate to this and I am going to start using alarms and start writing things down because I forget everything and this will help keep me accountable!

  4. I really like this! I really started putting my own mindfulness into practice and have actually been consistent every day. After just finishing the Miracle Morning, I’m even more inspired to wake up early and give myself even more time to focus on personal goals and self-improvement. I’ve realized after doing this for several months straight, it really has started to automatically fill other areas of my life!

  6. I’m so glad this motivated you! I totally agree – you can go far when you become consistent with things! I think when people tell themselves that they aren’t consistent – they don’t realize that they can change at any moment! Humans are routine by nature.

  7. Fabulous suggestions. I always say — I didn’t get into this mess in one day – it won’t get cleaned up in one day. Lasting change is always slow and gradual for me. Blessings

  8. I agree. You cannot make any better difference if you go too fast (and if you stop). šŸ™‚ Great post, thanks for inspiration! Meditation is very important in my life too.

I have to sleep from a specific time until another time all the time. I love your idea of setting alarms before and after because I will say just finish this post then I remember I forgot to send out my tweets and … next thing I know it is 2 hours later and another night nowhere near my schedule.

  14. These are great ways to be consistent. It’s really important that you are consistent in everything that you do. I love all the tips, especially the one about being realistic with setting up the small changes in your life. You have to think it through before you commit otherwise you’ll end up not reaching your goal.

  15. Making sure you stay consistent with things that are most important to you is such a great reminder. There are so many times that I jump around way too much and try to do too many things and become inconsistent and that’s even worse.
