A shorthand definition: Mindfulness is a way to connect all of your senses (sight, smell, hearing, feel, taste) into the present moment.

So how can mindfulness help you practice self-love?

It’s super simple.

Through mindfulness, you’re able to realize what your self-love needs are. Mindfulness is living in the present moment and self-love is recognizing what you need to nourish your mind, body, and soul. So when you combine the two, you are remaining present in the body and being true to your most authentic self.

If you breathe into the moment maybe you’ll realize it’s been a few hours since you had a glass of water. Maybe you realize that you haven’t eaten enough nourishing meals lately. Maybe you’ve been sitting at your desk too long and need to move your body. Or you feel a little burnt out or overwhelmed from the day-to-day. It becomes easier to set boundaries and practice self-care when you are aware.

By living in the present moment, it’s easy to quickly assess what your needs are or how certain people are making you feel. Practicing self-love can also mean distancing yourself from people who are negative or emitting bad vibes. I was recently in a situation where I was surrounded by a person who was focused on making others look bad to make them feel better. (I think we ALL know a person like this.) They were making rude comments about my loved ones, asking really inappropriate questions and just living in a low-vibe state.

Gratefully, I used this as an opportunity to stay present and aware. I was able to meet the situation with grace and empathy rather than sink my vibe to their level and get emotional. I realized that it would be in my best interest to only be around this person for a limited amount of time. (AKA: Setting boundaries) For me, personally, my environment and my tribe are the greatest ways that I practice self-love by being conscious enough to step away from anyone who doesn’t live with the same intentions.

Mindfulness also means that you release judgment and try to not categorize moments as ‘good’ or ‘bad’ This practice is crucial when it comes to self-love routines. It’s easy to feel like we’re not doing enough for ourselves or maybe we didn’t have a ‘good’ workout or had a ‘bad’ day. Sometimes it’s just the effort alone that really counts. We always have the opportunity to forgive ourselves and then change our perspective on a situation rather than dwelling on past mistakes or labeling our days as ‘good’ or ‘bad’

Mindfulness is the highest form of self-love; it is loving your life and yourself through the connection of the present moment.
