What is a TedTalk you ask?
Truth alert: I didn’t know exactly what it was until I sat down to write this. I mean, I’ve watched tons of TedTalks before. But I didn’t really know what their mission statement was or what ethics they upheld.
So after I did a little research I found this on Ted.com:
“TED is a global community, welcoming people from every discipline and culture who seek a deeper understanding of the world. We believe passionately in the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives and, ultimately, the world.”
Pretty cool huh?
I’ve used TedTalks for school and for personal reasons but either way…I’ve always gained so much motivation from watching influential people speak on behalf of something they have committed their lives to. I would even go as far as…it would be a DREAM of mine to give a TedTalk of my own one day. Not sure what I would talk about but that’s part of the journey right?
Anyways…enough of my shameless manifestation. Here are some of my favs.
Why the best hire might not have the perfect resume | Regina Hartley
If you have ever applied for a job before, this one is for YOU. I love her approach to reviewing candidates. It gives me hope that recruiters and hiring managers look for enigmatic candidates.
Your elusive creative genius | Elizabeth Gilbert
Elizabeth Gilbert is one of my favorite authors and people…EVER. I recently read her book Big Magic and it was phenomenal. This talk is a brief preview of what Big Magic is about. I loved her idea about taking the pressure off the artist and making your creativeness a separate entity.
The power of vulnerability | Brené Brown
I was recently introduced to Brene Brown by one of my previous managers. She is INCREDIBLE and so relatable. She is a research professor at the University of Houston. She’s dedicated the last 16 years to researching and studying courage, vulnerability, shame, and empathy. Did you know that this Ted Talk has been viewed over 30 million times? It’s one of the 5 more viewed TedTalks in the WORLD.
Those 3 should hold you over for awhile.
My advice?
Take a moment to reflect after each one.
How can you practice some of the concepts they discussed?
Did something they say particularly resonate with you?
Do you feel inclined to share it with your friends?
Maybe you want to go out and buy a book they wrote?
(I know I purchased Big Magic within 5 minutes after watching Elizabeth Gilbert’s talk. I even gifted it to my mom for Christmas!)
That’s all for now folks.
